The Ultimate Guide to Tattoo Aftercare

Whether it's your first or your fiftieth, getting a tattoo is an exciting and meaningful experience. However, the work doesn't end once you leave the tattoo studio. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure that your tattoo heals beautifully and remains vibrant for years to come. In this guide, I'll cover everything you need to know about tattoo aftercare, from the moment you leave the studio to the final stages of healing.

  • What is the healing process like?
Healing a tattoo is very easy and requires minimal effort. Most tattoos take 10-14 days to heal fully.
Grey wash can take anywhere between 3-9 months to drop into its permanent tonal value, so be patient with the process.

  • Listen to Your Tattoo Artist:
Your tattoo artist is your best resource for aftercare advice. They will provide you with specific instructions tailored to your tattoo and skin type. Follow their advice carefully to promote optimal healing and prevent complications.

  • Keep It Clean:
In the first few hours after getting your tattoo, it's essential to keep the area clean to prevent infection. Wait 2 hours before removing the cling wrap, gently wash the tattoo with drinking water, then pat it dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the tattoo, as this will irritate the skin.

  • Moisturise the right amount:
For optimal healing, maintain this moisturising routine for the first two weeks following the tattoo application. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, alcohol-free tattoo moisturiser, such as Bepanthem tattoo ointment or Dr. Pickles, twice a day to the tattooed area. Avoid over-moisturising and ensure the tattoo does not become overly wet during this period. Experienced collectors may already know what works best for their bodies, but consistency is key to promoting proper healing.

  • Can I work out after getting tattooed?
I highly recommend that you do not work out for at least seven days after getting tattooed. Sweating is not good for your tattoo and can lighten and decrease the crispness of the tattoo. Also, gyms, saunas and yoga studios are full of bacteria that can cause staph infections in open wounds. IF YOU MUST WORKOUT, stick to light cardio and make sure to wash the tattoo after you sweat.

  • Can I go swimming after getting tattooed?
Absolutely not, I strongly recommend you wait a minimum of 14 days before you go swimming in any body of water. This also extends to baths. Swimming can lighten your tattoo, decrease crispness and cause dangerous infections.

  • Avoid Sun Exposure:
Protect your new tattoo from sun exposure during the healing process. Sunlight can cause fading and damage to the tattooed skin. If you need to be outside, cover your tattoo with clothing.

  • Resist the Itch:
As your tattoo heals, it's normal for it to itch. However, resist the urge to scratch or pick at the tattoo, as this can damage the skin and affect the outcome of the tattoo. Instead, gently pat or tap the area to relieve itching.

  • Be Patient:
Healing time varies depending on the size and location of your tattoo, as well as individual factors such as age and skin type. Be patient and allow your tattoo to heal at its own pace. Rushing the healing process can lead to complications and affect the appearance of your tattoo.

Remember, getting a tattoo is a commitment, and proper aftercare is essential to preserving the integrity of your new work.
By following these simple tips and listening to your tattoo artist's advice, you can ensure that your tattoo heals beautifully and remains a source of pride for years to come.

If you have any questions or concerns about tattoo aftercare, don't hesitate to reach out to your tattoo artist or a qualified healthcare professional.

    Happy healing!
